Journalist Fritz Pleitgen Dies at 84

Journalist and author Fritz Pleitgen, known for his extensive career with German public broadcasters including WDR and ARD, died on September 15, 2022, in Cologne at the age of 84. Pleitgen had been a member of the board of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, an alliance of German aid organizations, since September 2009.

"Fritz Pleitgen was a dedicated board member who consistently advanced the core idea and work of our alliance. He enriched the board with his understanding of the conditions and challenges in crisis areas," stated Manuela Roßbach, Executive Director of Aktion Deutschland Hilft. She added that the organization is deeply grateful for Pleitgen's long-standing collaboration and extends its condolences to his family.

Pleitgen began his career in 1959 and held various leadership positions within German public broadcasting. His roles included serving as ARD's correspondent in Moscow and East Germany, heading the ARD studios in Washington and New York, and acting as editor-in-chief and director general of WDR. He also chaired the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and was president of the German Cancer Aid foundation.

Aktion Deutschland Hilft is an umbrella organization of aid groups that aims to provide faster assistance in major disasters. Following Pleitgen's passing, the organization continues its mission and appeals for donations to support global emergency relief efforts.
