Industry leaders gathered at J.P. Morgan's 12th annual Healthcare Advisory Council (HCAC) event in New York to discuss pressing challenges and trends within the sector. Key takeaways highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in enhancing clinician efficiency and a renewed focus on cybersecurity, emphasizing technical resiliency.

Artificial intelligence is expanding its applications in healthcare beyond traditional data analysis. Panelists pointed to ambient documentation, where AI assists in recording patient encounters and generating clinical notes, and AI's role in streamlining clinician communication to reduce cognitive load. Peter Durlach, CVP and Chief Strategy Officer at Microsoft Health & Life Sciences, stressed the necessity of human oversight to ensure the accuracy and quality of AI outputs in healthcare.

Cybersecurity emerged as a critical concern, particularly following the Change Healthcare data breach in February 2024. Max Alexander, Vice President of Cyber and Technology Emerging Threats Research at JPMorganChase, stated that cyberattacks are a matter of 'when,' not 'if,' shifting the focus from prevention to resilience. Organizations must prioritize establishing and practicing business continuity plans. The discussion also acknowledged that AI tools can inadvertently improve threat actor capabilities, such as crafting more convincing phishing attempts.

Leaders also explored sectors ripe for evolution, including online pharmacies and home-based care. Alicia Boler Davis, CEO of Alto Pharmacy, described the pharmacy industry as "completely broken" and ripe for disruption. Furthermore, discussions addressed health equity issues, such as disparities in maternal mortality rates, with a call to action for active efforts towards achieving health equity, as stated by Orriel Richardson, Head of Policy & Advocacy at Morgan Health.
