J.P. Morgan: Tokenization Gaining Momentum Amid Broader Adoption

J.P. Morgan experts suggest that tokenization is experiencing renewed momentum. This development is fueled by a convergence of factors, including a clearer regulatory landscape and growing institutional interest in the technology.

In a discussion published on the company's insights platform, Hannah Elson, Global Head of Custody and EMEA Head of Securities Services at J.P. Morgan, and Oli Harris, who leads Kinexys, J.P. Morgan's blockchain offering, noted a transition from pilot programs to more scalable solutions.

Harris highlighted that the increased adoption of tokenization is underpinned by a genuine market structure transformation, where participants, assets, and cash are converging on the same rails to drive commercial outcomes. He also pointed to regulatory clarity in several key markets, which is giving institutions the confidence to move from piloting to production.

"Tokenized assets cannot scale without a trusted settlement asset and true delivery versus payment," Harris stated. "No cash leg means no market." He added that higher interest rates have also made idle liquidity more expensive, increasing the commercial imperative for cross-border, always-on, multi-currency settlement.

Elson further contributed that the growth of stablecoins and the emergence of new players, such as fintech firms, within the financial services sector have also been driving forces behind tokenization's development. Specifically, demand for tokenized yield-generating products like money market funds has increased.
