Judge Halts Paramount-Warner Merger for At Least Two Weeks

A federal judge on Monday ordered Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to halt their pending merger for at least two weeks, allowing states challenging the deal more time to see their case through in court. The order, issued by District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín, responds to a request by twelve states led by California.

In their lawsuit filed last week, the states alleged that combining the two media giants would "extinguish competition" in Hollywood, potentially leading to fewer choices for consumers, particularly moviegoers and cable customers.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the ruling a "critical first win," stating that concentrated market power often results in fewer opportunities and worse products or services for the public.

The proposed merger would bring together two of Hollywood's last remaining legacy studios, along with numerous TV networks, extensive streaming libraries, and news operations. This would consolidate assets like Warner's HBO Max and the "Harry Potter" franchise with Paramount's CBS, "Top Gun" films, and Paramount+ streaming service.

Paramount did not immediately comment on the order, but the company has previously stated it would "vigorously defend" the acquisition, asserting that the combination would instead bolster competition against larger entertainment rivals.
