Judge Pauses Paramount's Attempt to Buy Warner Bros. Discovery
A judge has partially granted a request from a dozen state attorneys general to temporarily halt the $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
A U.S. District Court judge has issued a temporary restraining order pausing the proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount. The decision partially grants the request made by attorneys general from twelve states who had sued to block the merger.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín stated that based on the potential market share of the combined entity, "the Court is persuaded that it can presume the proposed merger is likely to violate antitrust laws." She also found that the states demonstrated that "irreparable harm" could occur without the temporary halt.
The lawsuit filed by the states, including California, New York, and Massachusetts, argued that the consolidation would reduce competition within the media and entertainment sector. Concerns were raised about potential impacts on consumer choice and pricing.
Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have not yet issued a formal response to the judge's order. The companies had previously expressed confidence in navigating regulatory approvals for the transaction.
