A Dallas County jury has awarded $604 million to the families of victims killed and injured in a 2021 crash involving an 18-wheeler. The verdict, secured by law firm Arnold & Itkin, found freight giant C.H. Robinson, trucking company Lupus Superior, and its driver liable.
The crash occurred in March 2021 when a Lupus Superior truck collided with stopped traffic on Interstate 20 in Mississippi, triggering a six-vehicle pileup and fire. Three people—Jennifer Lipe, Benjamin Brewer, and Rhoderick Coleman—died in the incident, leaving behind children. Rodney Hawkins and Gabrielle Broussard sustained injuries.
Evidence presented at trial showed that federal regulators had repeatedly flagged Lupus Superior for safety violations for over a year prior to the crash. Jurors were told that C.H. Robinson hired the company despite these warnings. Furthermore, the driver reportedly informed both companies he was too ill to drive on the night of the crash, but C.H. Robinson allegedly allowed him to proceed.
The jury determined all three defendants were negligent, placing significant responsibility on C.H. Robinson for the awarded damages. This verdict marks a notable legal precedent, representing the first against C.H. Robinson since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that freight brokers can be held accountable for hiring unsafe carriers.
