Kalmar and Forterra sign agreement for autonomous terminal tractor
Kalmar and Forterra have signed a joint development agreement for autonomous terminal tractor solutions. The collaboration aims to integrate Kalmar's terminal tractor technology with Forterra's autonomous driving systems.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has entered into a joint development agreement with Forterra, formerly RRAI, to develop autonomous terminal tractor solutions. The agreement was announced on March 13, 2024.
Under the terms of the agreement, Kalmar will be responsible for developing the automation-ready terminal tractor itself, including the integration of its drive-by-wire system. Kalmar will also provide the Kalmar One fleet management system to oversee the operation of autonomous tractor fleets. Forterra's role will be to integrate its AutoDrive platform for autonomous operations.
Forterra is described as a significant developer of autonomous systems for ground-based movement, with experience in military and commercial off-highway applications. Its AutoDrive system is designed for complex environments like ports and logistics centers.
Kalmar stated that automating terminal tractors holds significant potential for improving both safety and productivity. This development follows a successful pilot project involving the Kalmar RoboTractor.
