Kalmar Introduces Battery-Powered Zero Emission RTG Crane

Kalmar has introduced a new battery-powered, zero-emission rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane. The "Kalmar Zero Emission RTG with battery pack" utilizes lithium-ion battery technology, removing the requirement for a diesel generator traditionally used for auxiliary power and enabling fully emission-free operation.

The new crane retains the mobility of conventional RTGs, capable of traveling up to 1.5 kilometers on a single charge. This allows the crane to move between container stacks or to service areas without producing any emissions. The adoption of battery power also significantly reduces maintenance needs, as battery packs require considerably less upkeep compared to diesel engines, eliminating tasks like oil and filter changes.

Beyond eliminating local air pollution, the battery-powered design results in quieter operation, a key benefit given increasingly stringent noise regulations for terminals often located near urban centers. Reduced fuel costs are another direct financial advantage for terminal operators.

Kalmar states that the new zero-emission RTG enhances terminal flexibility, allowing for more efficient utilization of equipment during peak periods. The company has a long-standing commitment to developing eco-efficient cargo-handling solutions, with over 50 percent of its portfolio already available with electric power options.
