Kalmar has unveiled a new automated guided vehicle (AGV) designed for container transport within port environments. The vehicle is built on the company's existing automation platform and is capable of handling loads up to 70 tonnes, including multiple container configurations.

The system utilizes lithium-ion batteries and opportunity charging, allowing the vehicle to recharge at stations located along its operational route. This replaces the need for battery swapping, a process that historically caused equipment downtime. The design also incorporates regenerative braking, which recovers energy during the deceleration process to improve overall efficiency.

Mikko Mononen, Vice President of Intelligent Horizontal Transportation at Kalmar, stated that the AGV provides a pathway for both existing and new terminals to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining high equipment availability. The product serves as an expansion of Kalmar’s horizontal transportation portfolio and is compatible with the Navis N4 terminal operating system.
