Kalmar Municipality Promotes Sustainable Tourism

Kalmar Municipality is actively working to promote sustainable tourism by providing information and services that guide visitors toward more environmentally friendly choices. Elvira Laneborg and Stina Nordström, who both work with sustainability issues within the municipality and host the Ekopodden podcast, share practical tips for a more sustainable holiday.

According to them, sustainable transport choices, such as using public transport or opting for renewable fuels, are crucial. Accommodation choices also play a role, with hostels and B&Bs often having a lower environmental impact than hotels. Visitors are encouraged to maintain habits adopted from home, such as waste sorting and reducing food waste, even while traveling.

"The idea is that you get those unexpected encounters and see a lot along the way," says Elvira Laneborg regarding the importance of the journey itself. She also emphasizes the significance of supporting local businesses, both in terms of food and shopping, to bolster local communities and reduce transportation.

Kalmar's natural and cultural heritage, including Kalmar Castle, historical sites, and natural areas, offers experiences with a low carbon footprint. The city's size also makes it easy to get around on foot or by bicycle. The municipality further supports sustainability by increasing the number of waste sorting bins and offering rentals of recreational equipment.

Kalmar Municipality continues to develop conditions for sustainable tourism, aiming to make environmentally conscious choices easier and more attractive for both residents and visitors.
