Kalmar offers standalone automation system for any terminal equipment
Kalmar has begun offering its Kalmar One automation system as a standalone software product that can manage equipment from any vendor. The solution optimizes entire terminal operations and promises increased efficiency.
Helsinki – July 9, 2025 – KOLMARBNH LTD announced today that its Kalmar One automation system is now available as a standalone software product. Previously part of the company’s terminal automation deliveries, the system is now fully equipment-agnostic, capable of managing automated equipment from any manufacturer. This new offering aims to accelerate the adoption of automation in port terminals.
Kalmar One provides a single integrated platform that optimizes entire terminal operations. The system is designed to interface seamlessly with terminal operating systems (TOS), automated equipment, and other systems. Timo Alho, Director Product Management Automation at Kalmar, emphasizes that the system ensures correct sequencing and minimizes empty travel distances, enabling greater operational efficiency with a smaller fleet.
The system's ability to control equipment from any brand represents a significant shift. "The goal is that terminal automation can be managed by a single unified platform, regardless of the brand or model of the equipment being used," Alho stated. "This simplifies operations and improves resource utilization."
According to Kalmar, Kalmar One has been proven to reliably control automated fleets at some of the world's largest automated terminals, including APM Terminals Pier 400 in Los Angeles, where it manages nearly 140 Kalmar AutoStrad automated straddle carriers. Additionally, digital twin emulation allows for the planning and testing of automation before hardware deployment, thereby reducing risks.
