Materials handling company Kalmar has outlined its commitment to sustainability, targeting net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2045 and carbon neutrality within its own operations by 2030. The company is integrating these goals with new EU reporting requirements like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Päivi Koivisto, VP Sustainability at Kalmar, stated that electrification is central to this transition. "Electrification is at the heart of this journey," Koivisto said. The company's "Eco portfolio" offers electric and low-carbon solutions designed to help customers reduce their emissions. Kalmar estimates that an electric reachstacker, when charged with 100 percent fossil-free electricity, can reduce its lifetime carbon footprint by up to 77 percent compared to a diesel equivalent.

Kalmar is also advancing sustainable manufacturing practices. In 2024, the company delivered its first electric reachstacker partly made from fossil-free steel, reportedly cutting manufacturing emissions by over 20 percent. The company emphasized the role of continuous innovation and scaling up low-carbon solutions in supporting its own and its customers' climate objectives.

The transition to a circular economy is identified as a key component of Kalmar's sustainability strategy. The company is focusing on designing equipment for longevity, increasing reuse and refurbishment, and reducing reliance on virgin resources. Maximizing the use of recycled materials, such as steel, is intended to minimize impacts on biodiversity and climate.

Kalmar also highlighted its commitment to people, aiming for a harm-free, diverse, and inclusive workplace. The company strengthened its human rights due diligence processes in 2024 and emphasized ethical business practices and responsible sourcing, requiring new suppliers to meet strict sustainability criteria.
