Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a contract to heighten three ship-to-shore (STS) cranes by six meters for Terminal de Contenidors de Barcelona, S.L. (TCB) in Spain. The project anticipates increased container traffic due to the arrival of larger vessels at the port of Barcelona.

TCB's terminal, located at Muelle Sur wharf, has an annual capacity of 2.3 million TEU and serves as a key logistics hub in the Mediterranean. The company focuses on developing intermodal container traffic across Southern Europe, with crane capacity enhancement being a strategic move for its market position.

The heightening project will be executed by Kalmar's Crane Upgrades team in the region. The scope involves complex engineering and project coordination. The process requires Kalmar's specialist jacking device to insert heightening structures and lift the two-thousand-tonne cranes by six meters. Reinforcements to the sill beam and braces on the portal frame will ensure structural integrity.

Work is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2014 and be completed for all three cranes by the end of the year. The contract value was not disclosed.
