Kalmar's electric empty container handler completes trial in Hamburg
Kalmar's first electric empty container handler (ECG) has successfully completed over a year of trial operations at the Port of Hamburg, demonstrating performance on par with diesel-powered machines.

PORT OF HAMBURG – Kalmar's new, fully electric empty container handler (ECG 90-110) has successfully completed a year-long trial at HCS Hamburg Container Service in the Port of Hamburg. The machine, with a lifting capacity of 9 to 11 tonnes, operated in two shifts and its performance was benchmarked against the company's existing diesel-powered handlers.
HCS Hamburg Container Service, which handles 300 to 500 empty containers daily, sought solutions to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The trial's findings indicated that the electric model matched the performance of its diesel counterparts. Operators reportedly did not notice significant differences in handling or performance during daily use.
"The machine performs well in all tasks, with no difference in speed or efficiency compared to the diesel model," stated Dr. Roland Karnbach, Managing Director at HCS. Kalmar representatives highlighted that a key difference is the significantly quieter operation and reduced vibrations, enhancing driver comfort.
HCS Hamburg Container Service is a family-owned business founded in 1978, now managed by the third generation. The company employs 75 people and counts major global shipping lines among its clients. The trial's success supports Kalmar's strategy to expand its range of electric equipment for the port industry.
