Kalmar's historic sites recount the city's past

The Swedish city of Kalmar boasts numerous historically significant locations that offer a glimpse into its past. The city features remnants of its 17th-century city wall, grand squares, and the bridge connecting to the island of Öland, all notable Kalmar landmarks.
Kalmar's Old Town, situated adjacent to Kalmar Castle, allows visitors to wander through narrow alleys and observe well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings. Below ground, two and a half meters beneath the current street level, lie the remains of the medieval city.
Kvarnholmen, the well-preserved city center, was relocated in the mid-1600s and encircled by a city wall. This area showcases a diverse range of architecture, from Kalmar Cathedral to charming cottages and unique structures like the old water tower.
Other notable sites include Kalmar's oldest preserved cemetery, dating back to the 13th century, and a city park laid out in the romantic English style. Kvarnholmen also holds visible and accessible portions of the 17th-century city wall. Historic buildings are also present in Lilla Torget, one of the best-preserved 17th-century neighborhoods.
