KOLMARBNH LTD's Move2Green research and development program targets the achievement of net-zero emissions logistics chains in ports, terminals, and heavy industrial logistics by 2045. A key focus of the program is the development of data-driven services and processes, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to enhance energy efficiency.

Traditionally carbon-intensive heavy material handling is transitioning towards electrification and renewable fuels. However, Kalmar states this is only part of the solution. More intelligent machine operation and efficient energy use, driven by data and AI, are crucial for eliminating remaining energy waste and reducing emissions.

"In the future, the physical machine will be only one part of the value proposition. The data it generates, and how we use it smartly, will continue to unlock new levels of efficiency, safety, and reliability," said Tomi Krogerus, Senior Manager, Analytics & AI at Kalmar. The program aims to build a secure data foundation for seamless interoperability and to create autonomous AI systems that actively eliminate operational redundancy and minimize emissions.

Kalmar is also developing sensor technologies for mixed-traffic autonomy, combining them with digital twins to optimize logistics chains, anticipate potential failures, and enhance safety even in harsh conditions. Predictive maintenance is also a key component for reducing the carbon footprint and ensuring operational continuity. Collaboration with ecosystem partners is a vital part of the program to accelerate innovation and share new perspectives in developing solutions.
