Kansas Labor Department Uses AI to Streamline Unemployment Claims
The Kansas Department of Labor has implemented artificial intelligence tools to improve the processing of unemployment claims and enhance customer service. These changes have reduced benefits processing times by nearly 80%.

The Kansas Department of Labor has modernized its unemployment insurance system using artificial intelligence, significantly improving efficiency for both staff and claimants. The overhaul replaces a system that relied on technology from the 1970s, leading to an approximate 80% reduction in the time it takes to process benefits.
Internal chatbots now assist customer service agents in answering complex questions more quickly. The AI tool searches internal resources in real-time while an agent is speaking with a claimant. AI was also used to clean up vast archives of documents and identify frequently asked questions for the agency's website.
Additionally, new chatbots help unemployed individuals navigate the service, resulting in over 90% of claims no longer requiring direct agent interaction. For those who do need assistance, staff now have more time to handle each call. Amber Shultz, Kansas Secretary of Labor, stated the agency intentionally evaluates AI to ensure it enhances the experience for claimants and staff.
The department is also developing predictive AI tools to anticipate high call volumes and is using AI to detect fraudulent applications and system vulnerabilities. Shultz highlighted that the transformation demonstrates how government technology can be agile and data-driven, fostering a willingness to embrace new technological solutions.
