Kao USA Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of two shampoo products manufactured by its subsidiary Oribe, citing potential contamination with the bacterium Pluralibacter gergoviae. The recall affects products sold nationwide in the United States and Canada.
The affected items are Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in 8.5 oz (UPC 840035231242, lot code YR010556) and 33.8 oz (UPC 840035231273, lot codes YR010566 and YR010576) sizes. These products were manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026.
Pluralibacter gergoviae is a bacterium that can cause infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses. While the risk to healthy individuals is considered low, the bacterium has been linked to serious health issues, including sepsis and respiratory infections. It is also known for its resistance to common cosmetic preservatives.
