Karen Barton Appointed Smarter Balanced Deputy Executive Director

Smarter Balanced announced the appointment of Dr. Karen Barton as its Deputy Executive Director, effective October 12, 2026. In her new role, Barton will work closely with Executive Director Tony Alpert to manage significant operational areas. Her responsibilities will include coordinating cross-team efforts and aligning resources with the consortium's strategic goals and member needs.

Barton brings over two decades of experience in assessment and learning organizations. Her background includes leading teams in research and measurement, assessment development, human and AI scoring, and technology. She has focused on advancing assessment processes and platforms and has partnered with state education agencies to enhance quality, governance, and public trust.

Executive Director Tony Alpert highlighted Barton's qualifications for the role. "Karen earned unanimous support from our multidisciplinary interview panels, including representatives from our member education agencies," Alpert stated. He noted that Barton offers a student-centered focus and the necessary skill set for leading complex operations.

Smarter Balanced is a member-led consortium that provides a standards-aligned system designed to support teaching and learning. The organization aims to improve local and statewide educational systems through its assessment tools.
