Karnataka, a state in India, is establishing direct communication channels and rapid response mechanisms with social media platforms, to be managed by its Information Disorder Tackling Unit (IDTU). IT and Home Departments jointly lead the unit, as announced by Minister Priyank Kharge. The initiative targets misinformation, fake news, and hate speech that impact governance, public safety, and law and order.

The framework was agreed upon following consultations with the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and leading social media and digital platforms. According to Kharge, swift action and close coordination will be key to identifying and addressing harmful online content. The IDTU previously operated during the 2024 general elections, scanning thousands of articles daily, conducting over 500 fact-checks, and flagging 515 as threats, which resulted in at least 18 First Information Reports.

However, specific details regarding platform commitments, the legal basis for the arrangement, and the participating companies remain undisclosed. The IDTU is headed by a senior police officer and involves several private firms responsible for fact-checking, analytics, and capacity building.

This move comes at a time when Karnataka's own proposed hate speech law is facing hurdles. The state's bill for preventing hate crimes has been held back due to potential conflicts with central legislation, with the Union Home Ministry indicating that existing laws already cover the necessary provisions. Meanwhile, other Indian states, such as Telangana, are also exploring similar legislative measures.
