Karnatakas KEO AI PC faces scrutiny over capabilities

The Karnataka government's newly launched KEO AI PC, introduced at the Bangalore Tech Summit, is facing criticism from the technology analysis group Medianama over its claimed artificial intelligence capabilities. Medianama questions the device's ability to effectively run local AI models, citing its specifications.

The KEO AI PC features a RISC-V processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 32GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD), along with a Linux-based operating system. While the device is advertised with an 'on-device AI core,' Medianama argues that these specifications, particularly the use of an HDD and limited RAM, are insufficient for processing demanding local AI models. The group suggests that performance compromises were likely made to achieve the reported low price point of ₹18,999.

Karnataka's IT Minister, Priyank Kharge, highlighted the affordability of the device. However, Medianama proposes that a more practical approach for the government would be to facilitate the refurbishment and donation of existing devices to schools, possibly with tax incentives, rather than developing its own hardware.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the device's demand, with some news outlets mentioning potential orders and sponsorships from notable figures and organizations. Medianama notes a lack of clear information regarding pre-orders on the government's official website. Consequently, the group has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request to obtain detailed documentation on the procurement, technical specifications, and testing of the KEO AI PC.
