KAYAK Study: German Travelers Prioritize Hotel Restaurants

Travel search engine KAYAK, in collaboration with restaurant booking service OpenTable, has released findings indicating a significant shift in traveler priorities. The study shows that hotel restaurants are no longer just an amenity but often a decisive factor in booking. A substantial 64% of Germans state that an on-site restaurant is an important criterion when choosing a hotel, with one in four having specifically booked a hotel for its dining options.

The data suggests that culinary experiences are increasingly shaping travel plans, sometimes superseding traditional sightseeing. Nearly a third (38%) of Germans have previously booked a trip solely to dine at a specific restaurant, a figure that rises to 50% among Gen Z. Social media also plays a crucial role, with 37% booking hotels after seeing guest posts about the restaurant, and a similar percentage (38%) choosing establishments based on the photogenic nature of their dishes.

Reflecting this trend, KAYAK reported a 64% increase in the use of its "Restaurant" filter in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. This surge highlights a growing demand for hotels that offer more than just lodging. Travelers, especially younger demographics, are allocating a larger portion of their holiday budget to food and beverages, with 59% of Gen Z reporting that dining is their biggest expenditure during travel.

KAYAK and OpenTable have jointly identified the top 50 hotel restaurants in Germany. This curated list was compiled based on guest reviews and demand metrics, including the number of five-star ratings and advance booking rates, providing travelers with a guide to hotels where exceptional dining experiences await.
