Kazakhstan aims to be gateway for Chinese capital and technology

The Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) in Kazakhstan is working to shift the perception of the country from solely a natural resources producer to a key hub for Chinese investors and technology firms.

AIFC Chief Product Officer Zhanbolat Kakishev stated that Chinese investors have traditionally focused on developed economies. However, he emphasizes that Kazakhstan now offers more than just oil and gas. The financial center, operating under a common law framework with specific investment incentives, aims to attract Chinese companies seeking international expansion.

Operating with its own legal and regulatory framework, AIFC has registered over 6,200 companies. It also provides comprehensive services for expatriates, including visa support. The center is expanding its focus beyond finance into areas such as aviation finance, green finance, Islamic finance, and specifically into developing AI infrastructure, including building data centers.

Furthermore, AIFC intends to support the mining and creative industries by developing financing solutions and investment platforms. Kakishev views China and Hong Kong as natural partners, capable of providing capital, financial expertise, manufacturing capabilities, and technology transfer. Kazakhstan is also being positioned as a promising testing ground for Chinese startups looking to expand into new markets.
