KBR Awarded $128M Contract by NOAA for Weather Data Services
KBR has been awarded a $128 million contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide weather data services. The contract supports the National Mesonet Program, aiming to improve weather forecasting and warnings.
HOUSTON – April 14, 2020 – KBR has been awarded a $128 million contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) to provide key weather data services through the National Mesonet Program.
Under this contract, KBR and its partners will supply local weather data from over 50,000 surface-based, mobile, and aircraft-based weather observation platforms in the U.S. and globally to the National Mesonet Program. This program serves as a central clearinghouse for non-federal weather data.
The data collected plays a critical role in the nation’s numerical weather forecasting and local monitoring infrastructure. It significantly improves weather prediction, severe weather watches and warnings, and emergency response efforts across the country.
"KBR’s work will help the NWS more accurately forecast future weather events and equip decision makers with the right information to protect the planet and the people on it," said Byron Bright, President, KBR Government Solutions U.S. KBR will carry out this work over the next five years in partnership with Synoptic Data PBC, Earth Networks, WeatherFlow, and the University of Oklahoma.
