KBR, Inc. has secured a contract from Statoil for the concept and front-end engineering design (FEED) phases of the Northern Lights Project. This project involves the development of an onshore carbon dioxide (CO2) storage terminal in Norway.

The terminal is a critical component of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration project managed by Gassnova. Statoil, in partnership with Shell and Total, is responsible for the transportation and storage aspects. KBR will execute the work in conjunction with its subsidiary, Granherne. The scope of engineering will cover the CO2 storage terminal, import jetty topsides, CO2 re-injection lines, and associated utilities.

The initial phase of the project is designed to provide storage for up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually. CO2 captured from industrial facilities in Eastern Norway will be transported via ship to the onshore terminal. The project is structured to allow for future expansion to accommodate additional CO2 volumes, aiming to foster new commercial carbon capture initiatives within Norway, Europe, and globally.
