Heat exchanger manufacturer Kelvion is supplying a Shell & Tube Double Safety heat exchanger to Silica Verfahrenstechnik GmbH, based in Berlin. The equipment will be installed in a new German pilot project focused on green hydrogen production via electrolysis.

The plant is designed to remove water from the hydrogen produced. Kelvion's double tube technology features tubes with two walls and two tube sheets at each end. If an inner tube wall is damaged, process media are channeled into a leakage collection space, triggering an alarm. The outer tube wall remains intact, preventing cross-contamination and ensuring operational continuity until the next scheduled maintenance.

Silica Verfahrenstechnik GmbH, specializing in gas purification and drying systems, also aimed to reduce costs associated with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) by selecting Kelvion's solution. According to CEO Andreas Hartbrich, the double tube safety design reduces the need for intermediate circuits and safety devices previously used with single-tube heat exchangers.

The new electrolysis plant is expected to produce up to 290 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour using renewable energy. Silica Verfahrenstechnik GmbH plans to utilize the double tube safety technology in future projects due to its demonstrated benefits.
