The Kenaitze Indian Tribe has become aware of a data security incident that may have involved protected health information. The tribe is notifying potentially affected individuals and providing resources.
Kenai, Alaska – The Kenaitze Indian Tribe (KIT) has reported a data security incident that may have compromised protected health information. The tribe is notifying affected individuals and offering support.
On July 27, 2026, KIT detected suspicious activity on its network. With the help of cybersecurity specialists, KIT secured its network and launched an investigation into the nature and scope of the activity. The investigation concluded that an unauthorized actor gained access to the network between July 16 and July 27, 2026, and may have accessed or downloaded certain files.
KIT's review determined that the incident could have involved the following protected health information: first and last name, Social Security number, driver's license or state ID number, bank account number, date of birth, medical information, and health insurance information. Notification to potentially impacted individuals began on September 25, 2026.
The tribe has established a toll-free call center to answer questions about the incident. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM Central Time (excluding U.S. holidays), and can be reached at (844) 301-0179.
KIT stated that the privacy and protection of personal and protected health information is a top priority and deeply regrets any inconvenience or concern caused by this incident.
