Kerala High Court Asks Indian Government for Response on BitChat Block
The Indian government has been given four weeks by the Kerala High Court to respond to a petition challenging the blocking of the BitChat application. The petition argues that the block violates fundamental rights and due process.

The Kerala High Court has directed the Indian government to respond within four weeks to a petition challenging the blocking of the communication app BitChat. The petition, filed by the Kerala-based Appropriate Technology Promotion Society, argues that the blocking violates rights to equality, freedom of speech, and natural justice.
According to SFLC.in, which has been tracking the case, the petition seeks the disclosure and quashing of the blocking order. It further alleges that authorities failed to follow the procedures mandated under India's Information Technology Act.
BitChat was reportedly removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in early October, with internet service providers also allegedly instructed to block its website. SFLC.in has previously noted that the app's developers were not heard before the ban and did not receive a formal blocking order.
The organization has also criticized the blocking as disproportionate and suggested it may be linked to the app's use during protests. Indian authorities have previously sought to restrict BitChat, citing its ability to facilitate anonymous communication and its resistance to lawful interception.
