Los Angeles-based Simpson Street, founded by actress Kerry Washington in 2016, has found success by merging the distinct leadership styles of its co-founders, Washington and Pilar Savone. The company's inaugural project was the HBO film "Confirmation," in which Washington also starred. Savone joined the company in 2017, and the pair have since produced a slate of feature and documentary films, television series, plays, podcasts, and other projects.
The success of Simpson Street is attributed to Washington and Savone's "yin and yang" approach to leadership. Washington describes herself as someone focused on ideas, emotional intelligence, and creative curiosity, while Savone is the "get-it-done" partner. Their collaboration balances creativity with practical execution.
"Whenever the Simpson Street partners disagree, that’s ‘good information,’ says Washington. While known as a creative visionary, Washington states she is also a strategic thinker who likes to move the needle. Savone, who serves as the company's president of production and development, is described as a strategist with creative and innovative ideas.
The company, now employing nine people, also recently co-produced the Off-Broadway revival of "The Whoopi Monologues." Simpson Street's vision is to create opportunities for themselves and others, one project at a time.
