Kesko expands grocery network with focus on new hypermarkets
Kesko is investing €200–250 million annually into its store network, targeting expansion of its K-Citymarket hypermarket format in key Finnish growth centers.

Kesko Oyj is moving forward with plans to expand its K-Citymarket hypermarket footprint, citing strong sales performance as a driver for the grocery division's profitability and market share. The company plans to build several new hypermarkets in major Finnish growth centers, countering a recent trend where long administrative processes restricted development to smaller store formats.
Ari Akseli, President of Kesko’s grocery trade division, noted that the company is actively pursuing new sites, including projects in Vantaa, Porvoo, and Kuopio, alongside the conversion of an existing store in Helsinki’s Vuosaari district. These projects are intended to capitalize on high-density residential growth.
The expansion is supported by an annual capital expenditure of €200–250 million dedicated to store network development. Beyond new construction, Kesko has spent approximately €1 billion in recent years to renovate existing locations. This strategy emphasizes data-driven business models to improve sales efficiency and local competitiveness.
In addition to new builds, Kesko is expanding its property portfolio, such as acquiring a majority stake in a shopping center in the Espoo region. The company intends to maintain this investment pace to capture market share in areas with high purchasing power.
