Retailer Kesko Oyj is implementing new measures to advance its circular economy strategy. The company is focusing on developing new circular business models and improving waste management and recycling across all its divisions.

Helsinki – Retail group Kesko Oyj is strengthening its commitment to promoting a circular economy as part of its sustainability strategy. The company aims to develop new circular business models and significantly improve waste management and recycling across all its business sectors.
The company has already launched several concrete initiatives. For example, K-food stores are piloting the replacement of single-use packaging with reusable takeaway containers, with K-Supermarket Ratina in Tampere participating in this trial. Additionally, K-Citymarkets are working to minimize waste from textiles and home goods through effective loss prevention methods, such as discounted pricing, donations, and outlet areas.
Kesko has also updated its packaging policy to enhance the sustainability and recyclability of packaging for its own brands, including Pirkka and K-Menu. The group is also participating in extensive research projects, such as one led by VTT and the University of Vaasa focused on developing packaging reuse systems.
Reducing food waste and restricting plastic use are key objectives. Kesko encourages customer participation in recycling by providing appropriate sorting and recycling facilities in its stores. The retail chain is broadly working to decrease waste generation and promote more efficient material utilization throughout its value chain.
