Kesko's Sustainability Efforts Show Tangible Results

Helsinki – Kesko Oyj, a major retailer in the Finnish grocery and building and home improvement trade sectors, has reported tangible achievements in its sustainability initiatives. The company's strategy centers on climate, nature, value chain, people, and good governance.

Kesko has reinforced its climate goals, with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validating its near-term and long-term science-based emission reduction targets in January 2026. The company is implementing measures to cut emissions from its own operations, including electrifying logistics, transitioning to biofuels, and enhancing energy efficiency. Furthermore, Kesko is developing plans to reduce emissions across its entire value chain.

Assessing nature impacts and promoting a circular economy are also key focuses. Kesko aims to reduce plastic bag usage and is piloting new circular economy solutions, such as a recycling model for wooden packaging waste and reusable take-away containers. These efforts align with broader EU goals for sustainable consumption.

Regarding its value chain, Kesko has updated its sustainability policies and is supporting Finnish small producers by facilitating their product entry into stores through the Pirkka Parhaat program. The company is also enhancing product traceability on its website, providing customers with information on product origins, such as the journey of its coffee. This increased transparency empowers customers to make more informed, sustainable choices.
