Key risk factors in merchant account underwriting

Compaytence has detailed the primary criteria that payment processors, including Stripe and Shopify Payments, utilize to assess merchant risk. The findings indicate that instant merchant onboarding often bypasses a comprehensive review, which is typically triggered later when transaction volumes spike or chargeback rates increase.

The analysis identifies eight critical variables, such as Merchant Category Codes (MCC), shipping lead times, historical transaction data, and corporate structure. According to the report, inconsistencies in these areas are common triggers for account holds or the imposition of long-term payment reserves.

A central distinction noted by the firm is the timing of the underwriting process. While traditional merchant bank accounts usually involve pre-approval due diligence, modern payment service providers often adopt a reactive approach. This model allows for rapid account setup but exposes merchants to sudden liquidity risks if their business operations are flagged by automated risk-monitoring systems.
