KFC implements turnaround strategy amid intensifying chicken competition

KFC is attempting to reclaim its position in the competitive quick-service chicken market following a long period of declining market share in the United States. While the brand once held a dominant lead in the segment, it now trails behind competitors such as Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and Raising Cane's.

After reporting seven consecutive quarters of declining U.S. same-store sales, the company saw a turnaround beginning in 2025. To maintain this momentum, KFC is introducing a new restaurant prototype on October 31, developed in partnership with the agency JKR. This move follows the successful testing of the 'Saucy' concept, which allowed the brand to experiment with menu additions like expanded sauce options and beverage platforms.

U.S. President Catherine Tan-Gillespie stated that the company is focused on making the brand more relevant and distinctive. The strategy includes a total brand overhaul and a shift in menu offerings to appeal to modern consumer habits, as the chain seeks to recover from a market share drop to approximately 10%.
