KfW, the German development bank, is celebrating its 70th anniversary on November 18, 2023. The law establishing Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) came into effect on November 18, 1948, initiating its transformation into the global promotional bank it is today.

Initially tasked with supporting Germany's post-war reconstruction and addressing housing shortages, KfW now finances investments in areas including new business ventures, innovation, environmental protection, energy efficiency, municipal infrastructure, and education. The bank also promotes exports and financial cooperation with developing countries.

Since its inception, KfW has provided approximately €1.7 trillion in promotional financing. In 2017 alone, the bank committed €76.5 billion, with its balance sheet total reaching €472.3 billion.

Headquartered in Frankfurt, KfW operates significantly in capital markets and is a major global bond issuer. Future priorities include sustainability and digital transformation, as highlighted by the establishment of KfW Capital in October 2018 to support German venture capital and growth-stage companies.

"KfW's 70th anniversary coincides with 70 years of Germany's social market economy. KfW has witnessed and supported this era of economic progress," stated KfW CEO Günther Bräunig. "The challenges have changed over the decades, but our core mission has remained the same: to support social and economic change, and to advance forward-looking ideas."
