KfW: Energy Transition Progresses in Households Despite Uncertainty

Frankfurt – The energy transition is advancing in German private households despite an uncertain environment. KfW's "Energy Transition Barometer 2024" report indicates that around 13 million households utilize at least one energy transition technology, including electric cars, photovoltaic systems, or heat pumps. This represents an increase of over one million households compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, 6% of households plan to acquire one of these technologies within the next 12 months. However, the study reveals a decrease in the approval of the energy transition. Only 82% of households considered the energy transition very important or important, down from 88% a year earlier. This suggests a degree of public uncertainty.

"Despite a slight decline in general approval, the adoption of technologies is still progressing. Economic viability remains a key factor," stated KfW Research. While households' perceptions of the technologies' profitability have become more cautious, scientific life cycle assessments are often more positive than many households' views.

The research highlights that the private household sector's contribution to the energy transition continues to grow, but public sentiment and future confidence have weakened. According to KfW, technology adoption is ongoing, with an increasing emphasis on economic factors.
