KfW expands heating replacement subsidy to multi-occupancy buildings

Frankfurt – KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau), Germany's state-owned development bank, has expanded its heating replacement subsidy program to include new applicant groups.

As of now, private owners of multi-occupancy buildings and condominium associations can apply for funding to install climate-friendly heating systems. The subsidy covers measures for communal areas of these properties. The German federal government provides budget funds for these investments, which are disbursed as grants directly by KfW. Commitment is often made digitally and automatically within minutes for complete and eligible applications.

In addition to the grant, KfW offers low-interest supplementary loans that can be applied for through regular banks. The program aims to accelerate the transition to climate-friendly heating and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector. The base subsidy is 30% of eligible costs, with potential bonuses for efficiency, climate speed, and income. The total subsidy can reach up to 70%.

Applicants can submit applications online via KfW's customer portal. Supplementary loans are available in conjunction with a grant commitment. The subsidy program has been rolled out in phases since February, initially covering owner-occupied single-family homes. The current phase includes multi-occupancy buildings, with further expansion to businesses, municipalities, and rental property owners planned for late August.
