Frankfurt – Households' readiness to participate in the energy transition has significantly increased, according to KfW's 2026 Energy Transition Barometer. In 2026, households' willingness to act rose to 66%, up from 59% the previous year.
The study indicates that approximately 34% of German households, equating to about 14 million households, are utilizing at least one green technology. Over the past year, around 1.1 million households adopted a new green technology for the first time. The adoption of rooftop photovoltaics and electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Currently, 53% of households have access to green electricity, an increase from 47% in the prior year.
Participation in the energy transition is influenced by income and housing tenure. In the highest income quartile, 51% use at least one green technology, compared to 20% in the lowest quartile. For owner-occupied detached and semi-detached houses, the figure stands at 59%, while only 15% of households in rented flats utilize green technologies.
KfW emphasizes that cost-effectiveness, targeted investment support, and adequate information services remain crucial for the energy transition to reach all households. These factors are deemed decisive for ensuring the transformation's success and widespread participation.
