KfW Launches 1.2 Billion Euro Growth Financing for Tech Startups

German development bank KfW has launched Venture Tech Growth Financing (VTGF 2.0), a new program aimed at supporting fast-growing technology startups. This initiative is part of the German federal government's 'Future Fund' (Zukunftsfonds) and builds upon the initial VTGF 1.0 program introduced in 2019.

The federal government and KfW are committing a total of EUR 1.2 billion by 2030 to the VTGF 2.0 program. These funds will be provided alongside private lenders, with individual financing packages ranging from EUR 1 million to EUR 125 million. The financing is intended to support companies across all stages of their growth.

State Secretary Carsten Pillath of the Federal Ministry of Finance highlighted that VTGF 2.0 is the only debt capital-based component within the Future Fund. "This allows for specific support to innovative companies during key development phases without restricting entrepreneurial autonomy," Pillath stated. The program is expected to stimulate Germany's venture debt market and bolster the country's venture capital ecosystem.

State Secretary Udo Philipp from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action added that the government aims to enhance financing opportunities for German tech startups at every corporate development stage, particularly during growth phases. "Expanding the German venture debt market through VTGF 2.0 plays a key role here," Philipp commented. KfW CEO Stefan Wintels affirmed that the program seeks to strengthen the financing ecosystem for high-growth technology companies and attract greater private capital.
