KfW Launches New Funding Programs for Digitalization and Innovation

Germany's development bank KfW, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), has launched two new financing programs: "ERP-Förderkredit Digitalisierung" (ERP Funding Credit Digitalization) and "ERP-Förderkredit Innovation" (ERP Funding Credit Innovation). The programs, effective July 1, aim to support digitalization and innovation efforts, particularly within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), through favorable loan terms and potential additional grants.

The new loans, funded from special ERP (European Recovery Program) assets for SME promotion, offer versatile and accessible financing options without a minimum loan amount, benefiting smaller businesses. The level of funding and interest rate subsidies increase with the project's degree of digitalization or innovation and its scope. These programs replace previous offerings such as the "ERP-Digitalisierungs- und Innovationskredit."

Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche emphasized the programs' role in strengthening Germany's competitiveness, stating: "Digitalization and innovation are the growth drivers of tomorrow – for corporations as well as for medium-sized businesses. With the new financing offers, KfW specifically supports small and medium-sized enterprises." Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil added that fostering innovation and digitalization is essential for reinforcing Germany's position as a business location.

A notable feature of the digitalization credit is the "KfW Digitalisierungs-Check" (KfW Digitalization Check), a free tool to help companies assess their current digital maturity and identify areas for improvement. SMEs are required to complete this check to qualify for the basic funding tier of the credit. Additional support is available through grants, ranging from 3% for the LevelUp funding to 5% for HighEnd funding of the disbursed loan amount, capped at €200,000.

The programs are open to freelancers, sole proprietors, and medium-sized enterprises with an annual group turnover of up to €500 million and a registered seat or branch in Germany. The initiative seeks to encourage investments in digital processes, future technologies, and artificial intelligence, thereby boosting the German industry's resilience and competitiveness in the global market.
