KfW makes debut investment in crypto securities
German development bank KfW has invested 10 million euros in a blockchain-based Pfandbrief, marking its first foray into the crypto securities market.

State-owned development bank KfW has acquired 10 million euros in blockchain-based covered bonds (Pfandbrief) issued by Berlin Hyp. This transaction represents KfW’s inaugural investment in crypto securities, signaling a strategic shift from issuer to active investor in the digital asset space.
The investment was settled on April 25, 2025, through DekaBank, which served as the market maker and custodian. Rather than establishing a direct technical link to the blockchain, KfW utilized traditional settlement processes, with DekaBank handling the underlying digital asset registration. This methodology confirms that institutional investors can participate in distributed ledger technology (DLT) markets without requiring custom technical infrastructure.
KfW management indicated that the move is designed to support liquidity in the secondary market for DLT-based securities, which currently remains in an early stage of development. The bank aims to use these transactions to gain practical experience with Germany's Electronic Securities Act (eWpG) and encourage wider industry adoption.
Looking ahead, the institution emphasized that while DLT offers potential for greater transaction efficiency, scalability remains dependent on broader European regulatory harmonisation and the integration of central bank money for settlement.
