Khan Law Outlines California Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Timeline

Khan Law has detailed the standard timeline for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case in California. Federal law dictates the process, which typically involves a meeting of creditors occurring within approximately three to six weeks after the debtor files their petition.

Following the creditors' meeting, a 60-day period begins for any objections from creditors. If no complications arise, such as the administration of assets or creditor challenges, debtors generally receive their discharge about three to four months after filing.

However, the duration of the process can extend significantly if the case involves the liquidation of debtor assets (an "asset case") or if creditors or the trustee raise objections. Such cases may take anywhere from six months to over a year to resolve.

Alia Khan Abedelal, an attorney at Khan Law, has been guiding debtors through bankruptcy proceedings in California since 2007. The firm serves clients in Stockton and throughout San Joaquin County, assisting individuals with unmanageable debt.
