Kia Deutschland GmbH has provided insights into the pre-conditioning system for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, designed to optimize performance and charging efficiency.
Battery pre-conditioning involves bringing an EV battery to its ideal operating temperature, typically between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius, before charging. This process is crucial for both hot and cold conditions, as it can significantly reduce charging times and enhance the battery's overall health and performance.
The system can be activated automatically via the car's navigation, by setting a charging station as the destination, or manually through the infotainment system or a connected app. When the vehicle is plugged in for pre-conditioning, power is drawn from the external source, ensuring the main drive battery is not depleted.
Kia emphasizes that this function is distinct from interior climate control. Its primary purpose is to optimize battery chemistry, thereby reducing thermal stress and potentially extending the battery's lifespan. Particularly in cold weather, batteries tend to charge slowly. Pre-conditioning ensures faster charging speeds at DC fast-charging stations and can help maximize the vehicle's range by improving energy efficiency.
