Professor Klas Modin at Chalmers University of Technology's Department of Mathematical Sciences has been awarded funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The grant will support the recruitment of an international researcher for a postdoctoral position.

The research project aims to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying patterns in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Such patterns are ubiquitous in nature and influence life on Earth, including phenomena like Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a persistent storm.

The work builds upon Leonhard Euler's 18th-century mathematical models for two-dimensional turbulent flows, which have historically been difficult to solve. The project employs a novel approach combining numerical methods with mathematical techniques from quantum theory, treating atmospheric flow equations as matrix equations.

Utilizing high-performance cluster computers, the researchers will calculate approximate solutions that preserve crucial geometric properties. This method is expected to provide accurate long-term behavior descriptions, offering new insights into the stability of phenomena like Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

In addition to Modin's project, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation is also funding researchers Eusebio Gardella and Christian Johansson at the University of Gothenburg for similar postdoctoral recruitment, fostering international collaboration in the field.
