KNESTEL introduces new exhaust gas particle counter

Munich – KNESTEL Technologie & Elektronik GmbH has introduced the PNCnano, a new particle counter designed for measuring exhaust emissions from vehicles. The device specifically targets Euro 6/VI compression-ignition engine vehicles.

The PNCnano utilizes a 'Clean Charging' technology that charges clean air to prevent contamination of the corona needle, which is designed for easy replacement. Particle measurement is conducted contactlessly using a Faraday Cup sensor. The company states the device meets PTB-A specifications, enabling its use across Europe.

Type testing for the sensor technology has been completed in the Netherlands (NMI) and Germany (PTB), confirming its suitability for official inspections and emission testing procedures. The counter's modular design simplifies maintenance and repair. It operates without consumables or liquids and can be cleaned with air or a soap solution.

KNESTEL highlights the PNCnano's applicability in general vehicle inspections, development of exhaust aftertreatment systems (DPF, SCR), end-of-line testing, and portable emission measurement systems (PEMS). The increasing regulatory focus on particle count for diesel exhaust emissions, driven by both legal requirements and health concerns, makes such measurement devices crucial.

The company emphasizes that particle count measurement, rather than mass, is effective in detecting faulty or manipulated particulate filters. This technology contributes to emission reduction targets and improved air quality, as ultra-fine particles pose a significant health risk.
