German company KNESTEL Technologie & Elektronik GmbH has developed new technology for measuring exhaust particles, particularly from diesel vehicles, based on the diffusion charging (DC) principle.

The measurement modules work by ionizing aerosol particles via a corona discharge. Subsequently, the charged particles induce an electric current in the sensor module, which can be measured. This contactless sensor technology, using a Faraday cup, requires no consumables or heated sample gas lines. The system is also described as having "Clean Charging Technology" to minimize contamination of the corona needle.

KNESTEL offers its technology in various formats: ready-to-use portable devices with approved software; customer-optimized, tested sensor designs in custom housings; or as modular units for integration by clients. The technology is already used for particle measurement in periodic technical inspections (PTI) in multiple countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and China, and is applicable to gasoline engines and test bench applications.

Particle measurement, especially of fine particles, is becoming increasingly important from both a regulatory and environmental health perspective. The company highlights that the technology enables precise and reproducible measurement results, which are crucial for meeting rising environmental standards and ensuring the correct functioning of particulate filters.
