KolmarBNH: Electrification and Energy Storage Aim for Net-Zero Logistics

KolmarBNH's Move2Green research and development program aims to establish net-zero logistics chains in ports, terminals, and other heavy industrial logistics operations by 2045. The program centers on electrification and energy storage solutions, which are crucial for reducing global logistics emissions.

Logistics accounts for approximately seven percent of global emissions, prompting customers to actively seek ways to reduce their carbon footprint by transitioning from diesel-powered to electric machinery. KolmarBNH emphasizes that electrification extends beyond the machines themselves, requiring the management of the entire terminal's energy system, including charging services and battery lifecycle optimization.

"We already offer a wide range of fully electric machines and continue to expand our portfolio. However, electrification involves more than just the machines; it also requires managing the entire terminal energy, such as charging services and battery lifecycle optimisation solutions," said Jukka Borgman, Kalmar's Director of Technology and Research. "Through Move2Green, we can accelerate this development and collaborate with ecosystem partners to make electric operations viable, scalable, and sustainable."

When transitioning to electric fleets, fast charging is essential to minimize machine downtime. Furthermore, electrical grids must be capable of supporting the new electric ecosystem, making various energy storage solutions critical. KolmarBNH is researching, among other things, ultra-fast charging and dynamic charging in collaboration with partners.

Collaboration with ecosystem partners is highlighted as a key strength of the Move2Green program. The initiative aims to foster innovation through cooperation, enabling faster achievement of goals and incorporating valuable external perspectives.
