Kraft Linerboard Prices Rise, Increasing Box Costs for Buyers

US kraft linerboard prices increased by $40 per ton in March, reaching $940-950, marking the first rise in 13 months. This development is signaling higher costs for packaging buyers.

The price movement follows a period of stability and a prior decline. Following a $20 per ton drop in February, March reversed the trend. April saw a second consecutive monthly increase, and producers were anticipating a further rise in June due to tight supply and steady demand.

Producers are implementing price hikes driven by reduced capacity and increasing input costs. The removal of production capacity tightens the market, allowing sellers to push prices upward after a prolonged flat period. This upward movement is attributed to cost-side discipline rather than a surge in end-user demand.

Packaging buyers face direct cost increases as linerboard and medium prices climb. Buyers who have not secured pricing may experience higher costs throughout the latter half of the year. Procurement teams are advised to review contract terms and consider locking in prices before the potential June increase, as capacity reductions are structural.
