Kraken Robotics Awarded $0.6 Million Contract for Subsea Cable Survey
Kraken Robotics has secured a Robotics as a Service (RaaS) contract valued at $0.6 million from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro for the inspection of a subsea power cable. The survey is scheduled for Q3 2021.
ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND – Kraken Robotics Inc. has been awarded a contract worth $598,871 by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to perform a marine inspection of the Strait of Bell Isle submarine cable. This vital cable transmits power from Labrador to Newfoundland.
The contract, which resulted from a competitive tender, is slated for execution in the third quarter of 2021. Kraken Robotics will deploy its KATFISH™ towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) system, along with its Autonomous/Remote Launch and Recovery System (ALARS), operating from the research vessel R/V Ocean Seeker.
The survey will cover three HVDC cables across the Strait of Bell Isle. Each cable is routed through protective conduits on the seabed for approximately 27 kilometers of the 31-kilometer crossing. Kraken's SAS technology is designed to provide high-resolution seabed imagery with 3cm accuracy and 3D bathymetry at 25cm resolution.
The R/V Ocean Seeker, based out of Kraken's Dartmouth, Nova Scotia facility, is equipped with the KATFISH™ system, Tentacle Winch™, and ALARS. The system's real-time SAS data processing capabilities will allow for immediate onboard data review, enabling swift identification and further investigation of any anomalies found on the cable.
