Kraken Robotics Executive Discusses Subsea Technology and Growth

Dave Shea, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Growth at Kraken Robotics, addressed the company's trajectory, subsea technology advancements, and opportunities within the Canadian defense sector during an appearance at MASS2026.

The company specializes in subsea and seabed intelligence, with technologies including acoustic and optical sensors, navigation systems, and pressure-tolerant batteries. Kraken's origins trace back to a 2012 collaboration with DRDC and NATO's CMRE, which facilitated the development and validation of its Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) technology.

Shea also highlighted Kraken's strategic acquisitions, such as the Covelya Group, which has enhanced the company's capabilities in underwater communication and navigation. The combined organization now comprises approximately 1,200 employees globally.

A significant focus of the discussion centered on Canada's evolving defense landscape. Shea described it as a "very unique opportunity in the Canadian ecosystem," citing new defense investments and programs. However, he identified procurement as a persistent challenge, particularly concerning technology selection, contract establishment, and timely equipment delivery.

Shea further emphasized the importance of critical underwater infrastructure, noting that communications and power in Newfoundland rely heavily on subsea cables that require protection and monitoring. He explained that Kraken's "dual-use" technology approach allows for commercial applications, developed for sectors like oil and gas surveys, to also support defense and seabed intelligence missions. The company culture is driven by an "innovate or die" mantra, seeking individuals who challenge existing norms and learn from failures.
